Our Roots

Shri Daulatram Nopany Vidyalaya

Founded January 1954 · Now Nopany High · Est. by the Nopany Education Trust

Every alumnus carries a piece of their school in their heart. For us, that school is Shri Daulatram Nopany Vidyalaya — affectionately known as SDNV — now Nopany High. Founded in January 1954 by the Nopany Education Trust (established 1945), the school was created to honour the memory of Seth Daulatram Nopany, patriarch of a distinguished Marwari business family from Mahansar, Rajasthan.

The driving force behind the school was Rameshwarlall Daulatram Nopany (R.L. Nopany, 1902–1978) — a Calcutta-based sugar-mill industrialist, philanthropist, and secret financier of India's independence movement alongside G.D. Birla and G.L. Mehta. Through the Nopany Education Trust, he established numerous educational institutions across Calcutta, Bihar, and Rajasthan, with SDNV becoming the flagship.

Over seven decades, the school transformed from a Hindi-medium, boys-only state-board institution into today's English-medium, co-educational, ICSE/ISC school. Through every era, one thing remained constant: a commitment to shaping young minds with knowledge, discipline, and character.

"We were, we are, we will be the best!… We're Nopany High!"

Our Journey

From a Trust in 1945 to a thriving ICSE school in 2024 — seven decades of Nopany.

  1. 1945

    The Nopany Education Trust

The Nopany Education Trust came into existence, founded by the Nopany family — a prominent Marwari business house originally from Mahansar, Rajasthan. The Trust would go on to establish several schools across eastern India, including Vikas Vidyalaya in Ranchi (1952).

  2. Jan 1954

Shri Daulatram Nopany Vidyalaya Is Born

The Trust founded Shri Daulatram Nopany Vidyalaya in Kolkata, at 2-D Nando Mullick Lane near Girish Park (Jorasanko), to "preserve and perpetuate the hallowed memory of the Late Shri Daulatramji Nopany." The school began as a Hindi-medium, boys-only institution. The driving force was Rameshwarlall Daulatram Nopany (R.L. Nopany, 1902–1978) — industrialist, philanthropist, and associate of G.D. Birla.

  3. 1957–1964

A Future Titan Walks the Halls

A young Lakshmi Niwas Mittal — future executive chairman of ArcelorMittal and one of the world's most influential industrialists — studied at SDNV from 1957 to 1964 before moving on to St. Xavier's College, Calcutta. He remains the school's most celebrated alumnus.

  4. 1960s–1990s

    Decades of Excellence

Through these decades, SDNV operated as a respected Hindi-medium state-board school, sending generations of students into diverse fields — business, medicine, engineering, finance, and the arts. Alumni batches on record run continuously from 1960 onward.

  5. ~2001–2015

    Transition to Nopany High

The institution transformed into an English-medium, co-educational, ICSE/ISC (CISCE) school and adopted the shorter public-facing name Nopany High. Government records show the English ICSE entity established around 2001; the school was still recorded as "boys only" in 2011, with co-education following shortly after. By 2015, alumni organisations were describing it as "Shri Daulatram Nopany Vidyalaya (now known as Nopany High)." The exact rename date remains to be confirmed from school records.

  6. 2024

    70 Glorious Years

Nopany High marked its 70th anniversary — seven decades of shaping young minds. Today the school serves 387 students guided by 33 teachers (1:12 ratio), offering AC classrooms, smart classes, science & computer labs, coding, skating, karate, and scouting. Led by Chairman Chandra Shekhar Nopany and Principal Dibyendu Sen Sharma, the institution continues as a modern K-12 ICSE-ISC school while honouring its deep heritage.

Help Us Fill the Gaps

Some pieces of our school's history remain to be documented — including the exact year of the rename from SDNV to Nopany High, the precise dates of the Hindi-to-English medium shift and ICSE affiliation, the founding 1954 headmaster's name, and historical teacher names and photographs from the earlier decades.
